Once there was a family of Meercats. They were always on guard duty, guarding their burrow.
The 1st Meercat went to sleep when on guard duty. A Hawk swooped down and just before it grabbed the Meercat the Meercat woke up and ran down the burrow! It was safe but only just. The 2nd Meercat on guard wandered off away from home. The Hawk swooped down and the Meercat ran as fast as possible back to it's burrow. It just got thure in time. The Meercat family has a discussion about how to be good guard Meercat and decide to have at least 2 on guard at any one time to make sure each guard is doing a good job if one goes to sleep the other can wake him up. If one wanders away, the other can call them back to the burrow.
Moral of story : strength in numbers

This is a great story Adam, well done! You have a used lots of great vocabulary like 'swooped,' too. Try to use a range of complex, compound and short sentences to help increase the pace of the action.
